Madagascar pulled off a remarkable achievement by clinching both titles at the African 3x3 Basketball Championship. Since the beginning of January, several challenges were overcome on the road to ultimate victory.

The Rise of 3x3 Basketball in Madagascar

The 3x3 basketball discipline has proven to be a fruitful venture for Madagascar. From 2018 up until last Sunday, the national team, Ankoay, has made significant strides on the international stage. Just this past Sunday, both national teams celebrated victory at home during the Africa Cup 2024 held at the Mahamasina Sports Palace. This impressive feat is not merely a result of the players' efforts but also due to the diligent work of individuals who often remain in the shadows.

The Role of Technical Staff

Basketball is not just about the players on the court; they are the actors who take center stage at every competition. Behind them, technical staff and the national technical directorate collaborate to implement strategies that ensure the success of these key players.

Key Figures in Technical Leadership

Angelot Razafiarivony, the National Technical Director of the Malagasy Basketball Federation, is the mastermind coordinating training programs with his team. He is supported by four coaches: Jean de Dieu Randrianarivelo (Coach Deda) and Eli Rakotonirina (Coach Ramora) for the men's team, while Prisca Razananirina and Mathieu Rakotomalala lead the women's team.

Physical Preparation: A Cornerstone of Success

Physical trainer Erick Miarantiana Rakotondravao, known as Coach Pôty, played a crucial role in preparing national team members to meet the physical demands of high-level competition over the three intense days at the Mahamasina Sports Palace.

To ensure the health of the Ankoay national team members, two doctors, Pierrot Randriamihaja and Richard Rakotomalala, were consistently present to provide care and guarantee that the players remained in peak condition. Additionally, Jean Michel Ramaroson, the president of the FMBB, Nina Zafisambo, general manager of the FMBB, and several other dedicated individuals collaborated seamlessly behind the scenes.

Aiming High

In January, when the negotiations for hosting the Africa Cup 2024 began, Angelot Razafiarivony set ambitious goals. "In principle, Madagascar will host three consecutive editions: 2024, 2025, and 2026. Competing at home means we must win at least one edition. To achieve this, significant preparations were necessary," the National Technical Director explains.

Eleven months later, he fulfilled the objective he had set from the onset, culminating in this past weekend's dual title success. However, a new challenge awaits the Ankoay teams: the 3x3 Basketball World Cup in Mongolia in 2025.

Looking Ahead: Challenges on the Horizon

As the dust settles from their recent victories, the focus shifts to future endeavors. The national teams are now tasked with maintaining their momentum and preparing for the World Cup, where they will face stiff competition on a global stage.

Preparation and Strategy

In anticipation of the upcoming World Cup, the coaching staff will need to develop tailored training programs that address the unique challenges posed by international opponents. This will involve enhancing players' technical skills, improving physical conditioning, and fostering team chemistry.

Community Support and Engagement

The success of the Ankoay teams is not solely dependent on the technical staff and players; it also relies on the unwavering support of the community. Fans, local businesses, and sponsors play a vital role in creating an environment conducive to success.

Conclusion

Madagascar's triumph at the Africa Cup 2024 serves as a testament to the dedication and hard work of both players and their supporting staff. As they gear up for the next challenge, the legacy of this double continental title will inspire future generations of Malagasy basketball players. With the right preparation and community backing, the Ankoay teams are poised to make their mark on the world stage in 2025.
